Courtney Boyd Myers, of The Next Web, outlines some important technological aspects of progressive web design, including Responsive Web Design and HTML5 development, in her article The Future of Web Design. The back-bone of these technologies, however, is the crucial concept of “COPE”:
“By combining Responsive Web Design and a Content First Approach, web designers are designing for what is called “The One Web Approach”. This approach aligns with an important core philosophy: “create once and publish everywhere” also referred to as COPE.
Many publishers are already applying the basics of COPE by distributing their content to different platforms. The challenge lies in being able to take these systems to the next level, enabling them to scale and adapt to a continually changing landscape.”
This philosophy is certainly a key component in many business’ future survival, as it relates to cost. However, and maybe more importantly, it will provide a completely seamless experience for the end-user across ALL devices, even on devices that have yet to be created, which will ultimately lead to greater customer satisfaction. It’s clearly a win-win and I personally can’t wait until the day that “apps” and “websites” are one and the same.
